The paper under review proves some interesting results on the existence of a local-global principle (or Hasse principle) for the norm on products of separable field extensions of a global field \(k\). In particular, the authors' results make the assumption that one of the factors is a metacyclic extension of \(k\) -- that is, a Galois extension whose Galois group is a cyclic extension of a cyclic group. In the special case where this group is actually cyclic, they construct a finite abelian group \(\Sha\) that, in a sense, classifies the obstructions to the Hasse principle. Specifically, for a nonzero \(c\in k\) that is everywhere locally a norm, they construct a homomorphism \(\alpha_c\colon\Sha\to\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}\) that is identically zero precisely when \(c\) is a global norm. They specialize their results further to get explicit results, including the remarkable fact that when \(k\) is an algebraic number field, the only obstruction to the Hasse principle is the Brauer-Manin obstruction.
