According to the solution of Abhyankar's Conjecture for the affine line in finite characteristic \(p\), any finite group \(G\) which is generated by its Sylow \(p\)-subgroups occurs as a quotient of the geometric fundamental group \(\pi _1(\mathbb{A}^1_{\overline{\mathbb{F}_p}})\). Given such a finite group \(G\) together with its faithful representation \(\rho :G\rightarrow GL(n,\mathbb{C})\), there is always some finite extension \(K\) of \(\mathbb{Q}\) such that the image of \(\rho\) lands in \(\mathrm{GL}(n,K)\). One can choose a prime number \(\ell\) and an embedding of \(K\) into \(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}}\), so one can compose \(\pi _1(\mathbb{A}^1_{\overline{\mathbb{F}_p}}\rightarrow G\rightarrow \mathrm{GL}(n,\overline{\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}})\) to obtain an \(\ell\)-adic local system on \(\mathbb{A}^1_{\overline{\mathbb{F}_p}}\) whose image is \(G\). By means of this construction, for certain powers \(q\) of odd primes \(p\), and certain integers \(n\geq 1\), the authors exhibit explicit rigid local systems on the affine line in characteristic \(p>0\) whose geometric and arithmetic monodromy groups are \(\mathrm{Sp}(2n,q)\).
