The authors establish various real-variable characterizations for the atomic Hardy spaces \(H^p_{cw}(X)\) introduced by \textit{R. R. Coifman} and \textit{G. Weiss} [Bull. Am. Math. Soc. 83, 569--645 (1977; Zbl 0358.30023)]. Here \((X, d, \mu)\) is a space of homogeneous type, with the upper dimension \(\omega\), in the sense of R. R. Coifman and G. Weiss [loc. cit.]; \(\eta\) is the smoothness index of the wavelets on \(X\) constructed by \textit{P. Auscher} and \textit{T. Hytönen} [Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 34, No. 2, 266--296 (2013; Zbl 1261.42057); addendum ibid. 39, No. 3, 568--569 (2015; Zbl 1332.42029)] and the results are obtained for the range of \(p\in(\frac{\omega}{\omega +\eta}, 1]\). The characterizations established are in terms of the grand maximal functions, the radial maximal functions, the non-tangential maximal functions, the various Littlewood-Paley functions and wavelet functions. This completely answers the question posed by R. R. Coifman and G. Weiss [loc. cit.] by showing that no additional (geometric) condition is necessary to guarantee the radial maximal function characterization of \(H^1_{cw}(X)\) and even of \(H^p_{cw}(X)\) with \(p\) in the above mentioned range. The authors emphasize the following points for the novelty of the obtained results as compared with the known ones: \(\mu\) is not assumed to satisfy the reverse doubling condition and \(d\) is only a quasi-metric, moreover, the range \(p\in(\frac{\omega}{\omega +\eta}, 1]\) is natural and optimal.
