\textit{V. F. R. Jones} initiated the modern theory of subfactors in his seminal paper [Invent. Math. 72, 1--25 (1983; Zbl 0508.46040)]. The standard invariant of a subfactor is the lattice of higher relative commutants of the Jones tower. Popa showed that the standard invariant completely classifies strongly amenable subfactors of the hyperfinite II\(_1\) factor. Ocneanu also introduced paragroups for characterizations of finite depth subfactors. Jones introduced subfactor planar algebras as an alternative axiomatization of the standard invariant of a subfactor. Bisch and Jones proposed the classification of planar algebras by simple generators and relations. They also investigated with the second author of the paper under review the classification of planar algebras generated by 2-boxes. In this paper, the authors study planar algebras generated by a single 3-box. They classify the singly-generated Thurston-relation planar algebras (TRPA) generated by a non-Temperley-Lieb 3-box with a Thurston relation, using a new method for determining positivity of the Markov trace for planar algebras in this family. The main result is the following theorem. Theorem 1.2 (main theorem). Any singly-generated Thurston-relation planar algebra is either an \(E_6\) subfactor planar algebra or \(\widetilde{\mathscr{P}}_{\bullet}^{H}(q, r)\), where \(r=q^N\) for some \(N\in \mathbb{N}\), \(N\geq 3\), and \(q=e^{\frac{i\pi}{N+l}}\) for some \(l\in \mathbb{N}\), \(N\geq 3\), or \(q\geq 1\).
