Given \(\varphi\in L_1(0,1)\), in previous papers [Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim. 30, No. 9--10, 1145--1172 (2009; Zbl 1195.45004); ibid. 31, No. 2, 191--219 (2010; Zbl 1194.65152)], the author introduced and studied the so-called cordial Volterra integral operators \[V_\varphi u(t)=\int^t_0t^{-1}\varphi(t^{-1}s)u(s)\,ds= \int^1_0\varphi(x) u(tx)\,dx\quad(0\le t\le T)\] and, in particular, calculated the spectrum of \(V_\varphi\) in \(C[0,T]\), \(L_\infty(0,1)\), and \(C^m[0,1]\). In this paper, he develops a parallel theory in the spaces \(L_p(0,T)\) and \(W_p^m(0,T)\). For instance, it is proved that \(V_\varphi\) is bounded in \(L_p(0,T)\) iff \[\int^1_0x^{-1/p}|\varphi(x)| \,dx<\infty.\] For the special choice \(\varphi(x) \equiv 1\), \(0\le x\le 1\), for example, one may recover the classical result that the Hardy operator \(V_1\) is bounded in \(L_p(0,1)\) for \(1<p<\infty\) with the norm \(\|V_1\|_{L_p\to L_p}=p/(p-1)\). The spectrum and essential spectrum of \(V_\varphi\) in \(L_p(0,T)\) are also calculated. Several illuminating examples are presented, the most interesting ones being for \(\varphi(x)=x^{\alpha-1}\), \(\varphi(x)=(1-x)^{\alpha-1}\), and \(\varphi(x)=(1-x)^{-(\alpha+1)}(1-x^\alpha)\) \((0<\alpha<1)\).
