Let \(\mathbb P^n\) be the projective space of all hyperplanes in an \((n+1)\)-dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Thanks to a result by \textit{G. Horrocks} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 14, 689--713 (1964; Zbl 0126.16801)] it is known that a vector bundle \(F\) over \(\mathbb P^n\) splits as a direct sum of line bundles if and only if \(H_*^j(F)=0\) for \(j=1,2,\ldots,n-1\). In this paper, the authors consider vector bundles over the Grassmannian \(\mathbb G(1,n)\) of lines in \(\mathbb P^n\) and prove a similar result. More precisely, they show that a necessary and sufficient condition for such a bundle \(F\) to be a direct sum of twists of symmetric powers of the universal quotient bundle \(\mathcal Q\) of rank \(2\) over \(\mathbb G(1,n)\) is the vanishing of certain cohomology groups of the tensor products \(F\otimes S^i\mathcal Q\) (where \(S^i\mathcal Q\) denotes the \(i\)-th symmetric power of \(\mathcal Q\)). The authors also propose a way to extend their method to Grassmannians \(\mathbb G(k,n)\) (of \(k\)-dimensional linear subspaces of \(\mathbb P^n\)) for arbitrary \(k\).
