Generalizing the concept of an inner function for Hardy spaces on the disk, the authors of this very interesting survey call a vector \(x\) an inner vector for an operator \(T\) on a Hilbert space \(H\) if \(x\) is orthogonal to \(T^nx\) for every \(n\geq 1\). Many interesting examples are developed (shift operators on Hardy and Bergman spaces, multiplication operators, Toeplitz operators, compressed shift on the model-space \((\Theta H^2)^\bot\). Applications are given to the study of zero sets of functions in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of analytic functions on the disk. Birkhoff-James orthogonality allows the authors to transfer their theory to the Banach space settings. We recommend this publication to every one interested in spaces of analytic functions and their operators. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1417.30001].
