The authors prove the existence and multiplicity of subharmonic solutions for nonlinear equations of the type \[ (\phi(x'))'+g(t,x)=0. \] Here, $\phi:(-a,a)\to{\mathbb R}$ is an increasing homeomorphism with $\phi(0)=0$ and $g:{\mathbb R}\times{\mathbb R}\to{\mathbb R}$ is continuous and $2\pi$-periodic in the variable $t$. Their approach is based on phase-plane analysis and an application of the Poincaré-Birkhoff twist theorem.
