Based on the fundamental principles of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics, and the full Maxwell's equations of electromagnetism, the authors investigate the basic equations of thermo-piezoelectromagnetic viscoelastic materials. When the magnetic induction is steady, the electric field decouples, and one obtains the theory of piezoelectric viscoelastic continua. Similarly, when the electric displacement is steady, the magnetic field decouples, and one obtains the equations of piezomagnetism of viscoelastic media. Thus the approach used by the authors clearly indicates that the combination of piezoelectricity and piezomagnetism takes place on the basis of electromagnetic waves, i.e., for high frequencies when coupling through electromagnetic waves cannot be neglected. In conformity with the usual rules of modelling of continuous media, the authors consider the basic conservation rules of mass, momentum, energy and entropy production for viscous dissipation. The basic coupled equations are derived. Nonlinearities are disregarded.
