Poncelet's closure theorem states that if two ellipses \(\mathcal{E}_o\) and \(\mathcal{E}_i\) are given with the latter inside the former, and if there exist an \(n\)-gon inscribed in \(\mathcal{E}_o\) and circumscribed about \(\mathcal{E}_i\), then every point on \(\mathcal{E}_o\) is a vertex of such an \(n\)-gon. In the first part of the article, the author discusses briefly the history and several approaches to this classical result. One of them, to reduce the theorem to the case where the inscribed ellipse \(\mathcal{E}_i\) is a circle is followed, and given a calculus proof in the second part of the article.
