Let \(R\) be a ring with centre \(C=C(R)\), then \(R\) is centrally essential whenever \(R\), as a \(C\)-module, is an essential extension of \(C\) considered as a \(C\)-module. In other words if \(0\ne r\in R\) then there exist \(u\), \(v\in C\), both nonzero, and such that \(ru=v\). The main result of the paper under review is the following theorem. If \(p\) is a prime and \(F\) an arbitrary field of characteristic \(p\) then there exists a centrally essential \(F\)-algebra which is neither algebraic over its centre nor satisfies a polynomial identity. Recall that the authors consider polynomial identities in their classical meaning: multilinear polynomials in the free associative algebra over the integers with at least one monic monomial.
