In the framework of applications of harmonic maps in Physics, the author studies classical nonlinear \(\sigma\)-models regarded as embeddings of two-dimensional surfaces in a three-dimensional sphere, which is itself embedded in a four-dimensional space. Consequently, a system of nonlinear evolution equations are obtained by working out the zero curvature condition for the Gauss equations relevant to this geometric formulation.
