In this paper the authors define a family of functionals, called \(p\)-oscillation functionals, that are discrete versions of the classical total variation functional for \(p = 1\) and of the \(p\)-Dirichlet functionals for \(p > 1\). This type of functionals is motivated by several concrete applications in which the setting is not scale invariant: for instance, in the digitalization process of images with tiny details. The use of different scales allows the preservation of fine structures, precise elements and irregularities of the image in the process of removing white noises, and this constitutes an essential ingredient in the process of improving the quality of the data without losing important information. The authors introduce the notion of minimizers and prove the existence of solutions to the Dirichlet problem. Lastly, they describe Class \(\mathcal{A}\) minimizers (i.e. minimizers under compact perturbations) in dimension one.
