In this paper, the author considers the ordinary differential equation \[-u''(t)=\lambda\Big(u(t)+g\big(u(t)\big)\Big)\] for \(t\in(-1,1)\), and \(u(t)0\), subject to the boundary conditions \[u(-1)=u(1).\] The case \[g(u):=u^p\sin{\big(u^q\big)},\] for \(0\le p1\) and \(0q\le1\) is studied. In particular, it is known that if \(u+g(u)0\) for \(u0\), then for a given number \(\alpha0\), there is a value of \(\lambda\) that admits a unique classical solution with \(\Vert u\Vert_{\infty}=\alpha\). So, in this sense, then, the parameter \(\lambda\) is parameterized by this number \(\alpha\). The author's goal is to study the asymptotics of \(\lambda\) as a function of the number \(\alpha\) -- both in the case where \(\alpha\to+\infty\) as well as the case where \(\alpha\to0^+\). For example, one of the main results states that as \(\alpha\to+\infty\) it holds that \[\lambda(\alpha)=\frac{\pi^2}{4}-\frac{\pi^{\frac{3}{2}}}{\sqrt{2q}}\alpha^{p-1-\frac{q}{2}}\sin{\left(\alpha^q-\frac{\pi}{4}\right)}+o\left(\alpha^{p-1-\frac{q}{2}}\right).\] This is typical of the sorts of results studied in this paper. All in all, the paper seems to be written very clearly and carefully and is relatively easy to study. Any researcher who is interested in boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations might find this paper to be of interest.
