Summary: We introduce the concept of subordinate semimetric space. Such notion includes the concept of RS-space introduced by \textit{A. F. Roldán López de Hierro} and \textit{N. Shahzad} [J. Nonlinear Sci. Appl. 9, No. 6, 3822--3849 (2016; Zbl 1351.54032)]; therefore the concepts of \textit{A. Branciari}'s generalized metric space [Publ. Math. 57, No. 1--2, 31--37 (2000; Zbl 0963.54031)] and Jleli and Samet's generalized metric space [\textit{M. Jleli} and \textit{B. Samet}, Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2015, Paper No. 61, 14 p. (2015; Zbl 1312.54024)] are particular cases. For such spaces we prove a version of Matkowski's fixed point theorem, and introducing the concept of \(q\)-contraction we get a fixed point theorem of Kannan-Ćirić type. Moreover, using such result, we characterize complete subordinate semimetric spaces.
