The paper studies the rank 2 Nichols algebras of diagonal type over a field \(k\) of positive characteristic \(p\). The classification for characteristic zero was obtained by \textit{I. Heckenberger} [Adv. Math. 220, No. 1, 59-124 (2009; Zbl 1176.17011)] using Weyl groupoids and root systems. The main theorem of the paper under review considers Nichols algebras \(B(V)\) where \(V\) is a two-dimensional braided vector space of diagonal type, i.e., \(V\) has a basis \(\{x_1,x_2\}\) and the braiding \(c\) is given by \(c(x_i\otimes x_j)=(q_{ij})x_j\otimes x_i\), where the \(q_{ij}\) are in \(k^*\). Let \(M=(kx_1,kx_2)\). The main theorem asserts the equivalence of the following three conditions: (1) \(B(V)\) is decomposable and \(M\) has a finite root system, (2) the Dynkin diagram of \(V\) is as given in five separate tables for \(p=2\), \(3\), \(5\), \(7\) and \(p>7\), (3) \(M\) admits all reflections and the Weyl groupoid \(W(M)\) of \(M\) is finite. Whether or not \(B(V)\) is finite-dimensional can be decided by combining this main result with a result of \textit{I. Heckenberger} [Algebr. Represent. Theory 11, No. 2, 115-132 (2008; Zbl 1175.17003)] which says that \(B(V)\) is finite-dimensional if and only if \(M\) admits all reflections, \(W(M)\) is finite and for all points \(D\) of the small semi-Cartan graph of \(M\), the labels of the vertices of \(D\) are roots of unity (including 1).
