This book is devoted to sliding mode control of switch regulated nonlinear systems described by ordinary differential equations. All topics are introduced and developed making effective use of physically oriented examples treated in detail. After a tutorial introduction to sliding mode control, single-input single-output switched systems are treated using elementary differential geometry. Then delta-sigma modulation techniques are introduced and compared with the integral sliding mode control approach. The key issue is the use of delta-sigma modulation in order to reformulate sliding mode control as a class of switched systems, and to make available nonlinear control systems design for switched systems. The multiple-input multiple-output case is considered, making use of differential geometric tools. The input-output approach to sliding mode control is treated with the help of generalized proportional-integral control techniques. As a final topic, relations between differential flatness and sliding mode control are examined.
