This paper gives algebraic independence results for pairs of values \(\theta(q), \theta(q^n)\) for the modular form \(\theta(-q) = \eta^2(\tau)/\eta(2\tau)\) at algebraic arguments \(q=e^{2\pi i\tau}, 0<|q|<1,\) where \(\eta\) denotes the Dedekind function and \(n\) a \(2\)--power or an integer \(1<n<13\). The main ingredients of the proof are -- \textit{Yu. V. Nesterenko}'s independence results for values of modular functions [Sb. Math. 187, No. 9, 1319--1348 (1996; Zbl 0898.11031); translation from Mat. Sb. 187, No. 9, 65--96 (1996)], -- results about modular equations for theta constants, worked out in a very explicit and technical way, -- and the transfer from Nesterenko's results to the theta values discussed here by means of these modular equations, using an algebraic independence criterion by the author, \textit{S. Shimomura} and \textit{I. Shiokawa} [Acta Arith. 148, No. 3, 205--223 (2011; Zbl 1231.11080)].
