Under the operation of connected sum, the smooth concordance classes of oriented knots in \(S^3\) form a group \(\mathcal C\). Let \(\mathcal T\) denote the subgroup of \(\mathcal C\) consisting of concordance classes of topologically slice knots, and let \(\Delta\) denote the subgroup of \(\mathcal T\) consisting of concordance classes of Alexander polynomial one knots. The bipolar filtration of \(\mathcal T\), \[ \cdots \subset {\mathcal T}_{n+1} \subset {\mathcal T}_n \subset \cdots \subset {\mathcal T}_2 \subset {\mathcal T}_1 \subset {\mathcal T}_0 \subset {\mathcal T}, \] was introduced in [\textit{T. D. Cochran} et al., Geom. Topol. 17, No. 4, 2103--2162 (2013; Zbl 1282.57006)]. The main results of this paper are that the quotients \({\mathcal T}_0 / {\mathcal T}_1\) and \({\mathcal T}_0 /\langle {\mathcal T}_1, \Delta \rangle\) are of infinite rank. It is interesting to note that the \(\tau\)--, \(s\)--, and \(\epsilon\)--invariants vanish on knots in \({\mathcal T}_0\), and so the authors rely on the \(d\)--invariants of Ozsváth and Szabó in their calculations.
