An algebra \((S,\cdot,+,*)\) of type \((2,1,1)\) is called a restriction semigroup if \((S,\cdot )\) is a semigroup, \((S,\cdot,+)\) satisfies the identities \(x^+x=x\), \(x^+y^+=y^+x^+\), \((x^+y^+)^+=x^+y^+\), \(xy^+=(xy)^+x\), \((S,\cdot,*)\) satisfies the dual identities, and \((x^+)^*=x^+\), \((x^*)^+=x^*\). Such semigroups are also known as \(E\)-ample semigroups. Some additional conditions single out the so called proper restriction semigroups. Let \(Y\) be a semilattice and \(T\) a monoid acting on \(Y\) partially on the left. If some additional axioms for such partial actions are assumed, the structure of a proper restriction semigroup on a subset of \(Y\times T\) can be defined. Conversely, every proper restriction semigroup \(S\) is isomorphic to a proper restriction semigroup obtained by means of such construction using the partial action defined by \(S\). The author considers classes of proper restriction semigroups determined by the properties of these partial actions.
