The paper deals with indecomposable globally generated vector bundles of rank at least two on a smooth quadric surface \(Q\) and proves the following existence theorem: On a smooth quadric surface \(Q\) there is an indecomposable globally generated vector bundle of rank \(r \geq 2\) with Chern classes \(c_1= (a,b) \leq (2,2), a \leq b\) and \(c_2\) if and only if \((c_1,c_2;r)\) is one of the following: \((1,1,2;r = 2,3)\), \((1,2,2;2), (1,2,3; r = 2,3), (1,2,4; r = 2,3,4,5)\), \((2,2,3;2), (2,2,4; r = 2,3), (2,2,5; r = 2,3), (2,2,6; r = 2,3,4,5)\), \((2,2,8; r = 2,3,4,5,6,7,8)\). The main tool is the Hartshorne-Rao correspondence, through which the global generation of a vector bundle can be investigated by using the ideal sheaf of a \(0\)-dimensional subscheme on the quadric surface.
