Generalizing Descartes' rule of signs, the authors consider expressions \(a_0 x^{e_0} + \cdots a_n + x^{e_n}\) with real exponents \(e_j\). Proposition 1 characterizes the multisets of positive real roots of such expressions. Proposition 2 gives a characterization of trinomials of this type that are positive on the positive ray. This extends results of \textit{B. Anderson} et al. [Am. Math. Mon. 105, No. 5, 447--451 (1998; Zbl 0913.12001)] and \textit{D. J. Grabiner} [ibid. 106, No. 9, 854--856 (1999; Zbl 0980.12001)].
