Two categories are associated with each inverse semigroup \(S\). The first of these categories is known as the classifying space or classifying topos of \(S\) is the category of all étale \(S\)-actions, [see \textit{J. Funk}, Semigroup Forum 75, No. 3, 481-520 (2007; Zbl 1131.18001)]. The second category is built on the base of the notion of a right generalized inverse \(*\)-semigroup. Such a semigroup is a regular semigroup \(T\) whose set of idempotents is a right normal band, and in addition \(T\) is equipped with a unary operation \(t\mapsto t^*\) satisfying some axioms. A semigroup map \(\theta\colon T\to S\) is said to be étale if it is a homomorphism and for each \(e\in E(T)\) the restriction map \((\theta|Te)\colon Te\to S\theta(e)\) is a bijection. The étale maps over \(S\) form a category. The following is proven: Theorem: Let \(S\) be an inverse semigroup. Then the classifying space of \(S\) is equivalent to the category of right generalized inverse \(*\)-semigroups étale over \(S\).
