The authors consider a dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation in two-dimensional space \(\mathbb R^2\) and a Cauchy problem associated to this equation by considering a initial data. The present study is devoted to the global in time solvability and properties of solutions to this Cauchy problem. Unlike previous studies which have used the so-called viscosity technique, in this work the authors consider first the family of subcritical problems with a subunitary parameter which can be treated as semilinear parabolic equations. With the help of a Maximum Principle valid for the considered Cauchy problem there are obtained some estimates of the solutions to those subcritical problems in \(L^p(\mathbb R^2)\). Another important result in this paper is the existence of the global attractor for a variant of a subcritical problem obtained by adding a linear damping term, needed for the problem to be dissipative. Also, the asymptotic compactness, is obtained using the tail estimates technique. In the last part of the paper, the authors discuss the solvability of the critical problem with Dirichlet boundary condition in a bounded domain.
