The authors consider impulsive dynamical systems. Such a system is determined by a continuous semiflow on a phase space \(X\), a closed set \(M\subset X\) (impulsive set) at which the flow undergoes a change of state, and a continuous function \(h\) defined on \(M\); this function specifies the change of state for a trajectory that reaches the set \(M\). For such systems, they study dissipativity, asymptotic compactness, and conditions for the existence of a maximal positive invariant set (Jack Hale's problem). They give an example of a pointwise dissipative system that does not admit a maximal compact invariant set.
