The authors define and study the Morse-Ekeland index of perturbed Hamiltonian systems. Also they show that the calculus of variations in mean (the natural generalisation of the calculus of variations for the almost periodic case) does not allow to define an index which generalizes Ekeland's for almost periodic trajectories; that is, they try to extend the index theory to nonlinear almost periodic Hamiltonian systems, but they find a counterexample which shows that it is not possible to find an analogous of the Morse-Ekeland index in order to study the existence of almost periodic solutions of convex Hamiltonian systems
