Let \(\mathrm{GA}_n(R)\) denote the \(R\)-automorphisms of the polynomial ring in \(n\) variables over \(R\). The structure of this group is of great interest and well studied at least when \(R\) is a field. In particular (the case of \(n=1\) being fairly trivial), the case of \(n=2\), when \(R\) is a field was shown to be equal to \(T_2(R)\), the group of tame automorphisms by \textit{W. van der Kulk} [Nieuw Arch. Wiskd., III. Ser. 1, 33--41 (1953; Zbl 0050.26002)]. For a general ring, \textit{M. Nagata} showed that \(T_2(R)\neq \mathrm{GA}_2(R)\) [On automorphism group of \(k(x,y)\). Tokyo: Kinokuniya Book-Store Co (1972; Zbl 0306.14001)] and conjectured that the two groups are different when \(n=3\) even when \(R\) is a field. This was proved to be true by \textit{I. P. Shestakov} and \textit{U. U. Umirbaev} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 17, No. 1, 197--227 (2004; Zbl 1056.14085)]. In the present article, the authors define slightly different subgroups denoted by \(T_n^g(R), T_n^d(R)\) over rings of positive characteristic and studies them in some detail. In particular they show that all these groups are different for \(n=2\) for a domain (not a field) \(R\).
