Let \(R\) be a ring with involution \(*\) with \(R\) *-prime, \(Z(R)\) the center of \(R\), and \(L\) a nonzero \(*\)-invariant Lie ideal of \(R\). For additive maps \(F,d\colon R\to R\) call \((F,d)\) a generalized derivation of \(R\) if \(d\in\text{Der\,}R\) and for all \(x,y\in R\), \(F(xy)=F(x)y+xd(y)\). The first result in the paper shows that if \(F(L)=0\) then \(F=d=0\) or \(L\subseteq Z(R)\). The other results of the authors assume also that \(\text{char\,}R\neq 2\) and \(x\in L\) implies \(x^2\in L\). Then for \(x,y\in L\) either assumption \(F(x^2)=x^2\) or \(F(xy-yx)=F(x)y+yF(x)\) forces \(d=0\) or \(L\subseteq Z(R)\). When \((G,g)\) is another generalized derivation of \(R\) the authors obtain similar conclusions -- \(L\subseteq Z(R)\), or else \(d=0\) or \(g=0\), when certain conditions relating the two generalized derivations hold. Two examples are when \(F(x)x=xG(x)\) or \(F(xy-yx)=yG(x)-G(x)y\).
