In this paper the author uses fixed-point-free group actions to define nested classes of groups indexed over ordinals. Restricting to cellular actions on CW-complexes, he finds new classes of groups as well as new characterizations for some well-known classes. For example he constructs a class of groups which is closed under countable direct unions, HNN-extensions and amalgamated products such that virtually polycyclic groups are the only groups inside this class that are Noetherian. He also gives interesting examples of groups which have jump (co)homology and generalizes properties of the virtual cohomological dimension of a group to groups with jump (co)homology. -- A group \(G\) has jump (co)homology over a commutative ring \(R\) with a unit, if there exists an integer \(k\geq 0\), such that for each subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) either \(\text{hd}_R(H)=\infty\) (\(\text{cd}_R(H)=\infty\)) or \(\text{hd}_R(H)\leq k\) (\(\text{cd}_R(H)\leq k\)).
