The author deals with the study of the 2D Riemann problem for the isentropic compressible Euler equations modeling the expansion of a wedge of van der Waals gas into a vacuum. He generalizes the theorem of \textit{J.-Q. Li} and \textit{Y.-X. Zheng} [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 193, No. 3, 623--657 (2009; Zbl 1170.76021)] by proving the existence of the global in time classical solution. To do this, he considers a system of 2D self similar flows. A~commutator relation due to \textit{J.-Q. Li} et al. [Commun. Math. Phys. 267, No. 1, 1--12 (2006; Zbl 1113.76080)] is used to derive a characteristic decomposition allowing him to establish a priori gradient estimate of the solution. To reach to the global solution, due to the existence of vacuum boundary, the author extends the local solution of the Goursat problem up to the interface of gas with vacuum by solving many Goursat problems in each extension step.
