Let \(m\) and \(n\) are positive integers and \(p \in [1, \infty)\). In the paper under review, the authors consider \((m, p)\)-hypercontractions and \((m, p)\)-isometries on Banach spaces: A bounded linear operator \(T\) on a Banach space \(X\) is said to be (i) an \((m, p)\)-contraction if \[ \sum_{k = 0}^m (-1)^k {{m}\choose{k}} \|T^k x\|^p \geq 0 \quad \quad (x \in X), \] and (ii) an \((m, p)\)-isometry if \[ \sum_{k = 0}^m (-1)^k {{m}\choose{k}} \|T^k x\|^p = 0 \quad \quad (x \in X). \] A bounded linear operator \(T\) on \(X\) is said to be an \((n, p)\)-hypercontraction if \(T\) is an \((m, p)\)-contraction for all \(1 \leq m \leq n\). These notions are motivated by the seminal papers [\textit{J. Agler}, J. Oper. Theory 13, 203--217 (1985; Zbl 0593.47022)] and [\textit{J. Agler} and \textit{M. Stankus}, Integral Equations Oper. Theory 21, No. 4, 383--429 (1995; Zbl 0836.47008)]. The Hilbert space version of \((n, p)\)-hypercontraction, that is, \(m\)-hypercontractions, are closely related to the weighted Bergman spaces (as model space). More precisely, the weighted Bergman spaces on the unit disc play the role of model space for the class of pure \(m\)-hypercontractions on Hilbert spaces (see [Agler, loc. cit.]). Agler's model theory for hypercontractions was motivated by the classical Sz.-Nagy and Foias model theory for contractions and de Branges-Rovnyak spaces. The main result of this paper is a Banach space analogue of the above model theorem for pure and \((n, p)\)-contractions. The authors also prove a Banach space version of Rota's similarity model for contractions on Hilbert spaces [\textit{G.-C. Rota}, Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 13, 469--472 (1960; Zbl 0097.31604)]. The paper contains a list of interesting ideas and useful constructions.
