This paper is dedicated to the local well-posedness for the Cauchy problem \[ \begin{aligned} &u_{tt}-u_{xx}+\beta u_{xxxx}-u_{xxxxxx}=(u^2)_{xx},\\&u(x,0)=\varphi(x),\qquad u_t(x,0)=\psi_x(x),\end{aligned} \] where \(\beta=\pm1\). The local well-posedness is established for \((\varphi,\psi)\in H^s(\mathbb{R})\times H^{s-1}(\mathbb{R})\) with \(s>-\frac{3}{4}\), thus improving an earlier paper [the first author and \textit{L. G. Farah}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 385, No. 1, 230--242 (2012; Zbl 1231.35045)] where the threshold \(s>-\frac{1}{2}\) was obtained. The main result is a bilinear inequality in the relevant Bourgain spaces, which is obtained through Tao's \([k,Z]\)-multiplier norm method [\textit{T. Tao}, Am. J. Math. 123, No. 5, 839--908 (2001; Zbl 0998.42005)]. The well-posedness then follows from a standard contraction mapping argument.
