Let \(G\) be an almost simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic \(p\). Its Lie algebra \(\mathfrak g\) comes with a restricted structure (also known as \([p]\)-structure). Let \(M\) be a restricted \(\mathfrak g\)-module. A theorem of Hochschild identifies \(H_*^1(\mathfrak g,M)\) with a subspace of \(H^1(\mathfrak g,M)\), where the former refers to cohomology computed in the category of restricted \(\mathfrak g\)-modules, the latter to its counterpart in the category of all \(\mathfrak g\)-modules. The paper investigates under what conditions on a simple \(G\)-module \(M\) the cohomology group \(H_*^1(\mathfrak g,M)\) is nonzero and isomorphic to \(H^1(G,M)\). Outer derivations of \(\mathfrak g\) are also studied. The author has misunderstood the terminology ``isomorphism into'' used by Hochschild in 1954. This makes that he identifies \(H_*^1(\mathfrak g,M)\) with all of \(H^1(\mathfrak g,M)\).
