Let \(\mathcal A\) be the category of connected graded algebras over a commutative ring \(R\), and let \(\mathcal C\) be the category of connected graded coalgebras over \(R\). By a result of \textit{I. Berstein} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 115, 257--259 (1965; Zbl 0134.42404)] there is an equivalence between the category \(\mathcal C\) and the subcategory of comonoids in \(\mathcal A\), and this equivalence restricts to an equivalence between the subcategories of graded commutative objects in \(\mathcal C\) and cogroups in \(\mathcal A\) with underlying graded cocommutative coalgebra. The author shows an equivalence between the subcategory of positively graded modules of finite type and locally at most singly generated \(R\)-modules and the subcategory of cogroups of \(\mathcal A\) with underlying graded cocommutative algebra and finite type as \(R\)-module (in case \(R\) is a field, the finiteness condition can be removed). The last section is devoted to topological applications, mainly to 1-connected co-\(H\)-groups of finite type. Thus, it is shown that \(\Omega X\) is a homotopy commutative \(H\)-group if and only if \(X\) is homotopy equivalent to a singleton, \(S^3\) or \(S^7\), generalizing a result by \textit{H. Kachi} [Hiroshima Math. J. 20, No. 2, 365--384 (1990; Zbl 0711.55007)].
