Let \(G\) be a topological group acting on a set \(X\). If for every \(x\in X\) the stabilizer \(G_x\) of \(x\) is closed in \(G\), it is shown that \(X\) can be equipped with the Hausdorff topology under which the action is continuous and which inherits many properties of the given topology on \(G\). Moreover, if \(X=H\) is a group or a ring and \(G\) acts on \(H\) as automorphisms, the author describes the finest Hausdorff group or respectively ring topology on \(H\) under which the action of \(G\) on \(H\) is continuous. The assumption that \(G_x\) is closed for every \(x\in X\) is essential. Indeed, the author gives an example of a group \(H\) such that there is no Hausdorff group topology on \(H\) under which a given action of a Polish group on \(H\) is continuous.
