The paper deals with the semilinear elliptic equation \(-\Delta_g u+hu=u^{p-1}\), \(u>0\) on an \(n\)-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold \((\mathcal{M},g)\) without boundary. Here \(h\) is a \(C^1\) real function on \(\mathcal{M}\) such that \(-\Delta_g+h\) is coercive and \(p\) is close to \(2^\ast_{n,1}:=2(n-1)/(n-3)\). The main results state that given a closed nontrivial simple geodesic \(\Gamma\) and assuming that \(h\) satisfies certain sufficient conditions, then for any small enough \(\epsilon>0\) there exists one solution for \(p=2^\ast_{n,1}+\epsilon\) and another one for \(p=2^\ast_{n,1}-\epsilon\) which concentrate along \(\Gamma\) as \(\epsilon\rightarrow 0\). A connection with the solution of a class of periodic ordinary differential equations with singularity is established.
