The author studies the local well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear equation in \(\mathbb R\): \[ \eta_t +\eta_x + \tfrac32 \varepsilon\eta\eta_x + \iota\epsilon^2\eta^2\eta_x + \kappa\varepsilon^3\eta^3\eta_x +\mu (\alpha\eta_{xxx}+\beta\eta_{xxt})=\varepsilon\mu (\gamma\eta\eta_{xxx} +\delta\eta_x\eta_{xx}), \] which models the evolution of the free surface for waves of moderate amplitude in the shallow water regime and was proposed by \textit{A. Constantin} and \textit{D. Lannes} [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 192, No. 1, 165--186 (2009; Zbl 1169.76010)]. If the shallowness parameter \(\mu \ll 1\) and the amplitude parameter \(\varepsilon =O(\mu )\), then the KdV equation can be recovered; while if \(\mu \ll 1\) and \(\varepsilon =O(\sqrt{\mu})\), then the Camassa-Holm equation can be recovered. Applying the pseudo-parabolic regularization technique and employing a limiting procedure, the author proves the local well-posedness of strong solutions in \(H^s (\mathbb R)\) with \(s>3/2\). Moreover, a sufficient condition for the existence of weak solutions in \(H^s(\mathbb R)\) with \(1 <s\leq 3/2\) is obtained. The main ideas of proving these results come from those presented by \textit{S. Hakkaev} and \textit{K. Kirchev} [Commun. Partial Differ. Equations 30, No. 5--6, 761--781 (2005; Zbl 1076.35098)], \textit{Y. A. Li} and \textit{P. J. Olver} [J. Differ. Equations 162, No. 1, 27--63 (2000; Zbl 0958.35119)], but some additional difficulties arise here and are circumvented by using carefully estimates for each iterative approximation of solutions.
