In the paper under review the authors study the shape of the min-max minimal hypersurfaces produced by \textit{F. J. Almgren jun.} [Topology 1, 257--299 (1962; Zbl 0118.18503)] and \textit{J. T. Pitts} [Existence and regularity of minimal surfaces on Riemannian manifolds. Princeton, New Jersey: Princeton University Press; University of Tokyo Press (1981; Zbl 0462.58003)] corresponding to the fundamental class \([M] \in H_{n+1}(M)\) of a connected, closed, orientable Riemannian manifold \((M^{n+1}, g)\) with \(2 \leqslant n \leqslant 6\) and positive Ricci curvature. As main result they prove that a closed, connected, embedded min-max minimal hypersurface \(\Sigma \subset M^{n+1}\) corresponding to \([M]\) is either orientable of multiplicity one, with Morse index one and volume \(V(M) = W_M\), or non-orientable of multiplicity two with \(2V(\Sigma) = W_M\), where \[ W_M = \min \{V(\Sigma), \text{ if }\Sigma\text{ is orientable, and }2 V(\Sigma),\text{ if }\Sigma\text{ is non-orientable}\} \] with minimum taken over all connected, closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces in \(M^{n+1}\). The authors remark that in the result above the condition of positive Ricci curvature can be dropped by assuming that \((M^{n+1},g)\) does not admit closed, embedded minimal hypersurfaces with stable two-sided covering.
