If \(C\) is a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field and \(P\) is a point in \(C\), a degree \(d\)-Abel map is a map \(\alpha^{d}_{L}: C^{d}\to J_{C}\), sending \((Q_{1},\dots,Q_{d})\) to the invertible sheaf \(L(dP-Q_{1}-\dots- Q_{d})\). Abel maps for singular curves have been constructed only in a few cases. In the present paper, the authors give local conditions to the existence of Abel maps for smoothings of nodal curves \(f:\mathcal{C}\to B\), extending the Abel maps for the generic fiber \(\alpha^{d}_{\mathcal{L}}: \mathcal{C}\dashrightarrow\;\overline{J}_{\underline{e}}\), where \(\overline{J}_{\underline{e}}\) is \textit{E. Esteves}' compactified Jacobian [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No. 8, 3045--3095 (2001; Zbl 0974.14009)]. This result is used to construct Abel maps of any degree for nodal curves with two components.
