A surjective map \(f:[0,1]\to X\) is called an arcwise increasing map if for any two closed subintervals \(A\), \(B\) of \([0,1]\) with \(A\) properly contained in \(B\), \(f(A)\) is properly contained in \(f(B)\). This notion was introduced by the second author in [Houston J. Math. 41, No. 2, 683--699 (2015; Zbl 1335.54014)]. The motivation of the current work is to study (metrizable) continua which admit arcwise increasing maps. Sections 1 and 2 provide, respectively, an introduction and some definitions of basic terms. In Section 3, the authors characterize graphs that admit arcwise increasing maps. The main result of Section 4, Theorem 4.19, characterizes Peano continua that contain no free arcs via four equivalent statements. This is then used to prove Theorem 4.21 which contains the statement that Peano continua with no free arcs admit arcwise increasing maps. Section 5 contains a characterization of dendrites that admit arcwise increasing maps. The final section gives an application of the technology of arcwise increasing maps by obtaining three theorems, 6.1--6.3, which show that certain classes of continua admit Whitney preserving maps (definition on p. 91) that are not homeomorphisms. There are also some questions related to these results.
