This paper considers the hyper-Bessel function defined by \[ J^{(m)}_{\nu_1, \dots , \nu_m}(z)=Z^\mu \sum_{k=0}^\infty \frac{(-1)^k Z^{k(m+1)}}{k! \Gamma(k+\nu_1+1)\cdots \Gamma(k+\nu_m+1)},\qquad Z:=\frac{z}{m+1}, \] where \(\mu:=\sum_{j=1}^m \nu_j\). In the case \(m=1\), this reduces to the familiar \(J\) Bessel function. The above function is also related to the multi-index Mittag-Leffler function. The situation when one of the \(\nu_j\) parameters, say \(\nu_1\), is replaced by a positive integer \(n\) is of central interest. A bound and the leading asymptotic behaviour of \(J^{(m)}_{n,\nu_2,\dots ,\nu_m}(z)\) are derived as \(n\rightarrow \infty\) valid for bounded complex \(z\). This result is employed to discuss the convergence of infinite series of such hyper-Bessel functions in the form \[ \sum_{n=0}^\infty a_n J^{(m)}_{n,\nu_2,\dots ,\nu_m}(z),\quad a_n\in \mathbb C, \] in the complex \(z\)-plane. Theorems of the Cauchy-Hadamard, Abel and Fatou-type are discussed and shown to be the analogues of the theorems in the classical theory of power series.
