Let \(S=(M,J)\) be a compact complex surface with odd first Betti number. A bi-Hermitian structure on \(S\) is a pair of integrable complex structures on \(M\), \(J_+=J\), \(J_-\), inducing the same orientation and each of which is orthogonal with a Riemannian metric \(g\). In this paper the authors investigate the existence of compatible bi-Hermitian structures on \(M\) such that \(J_+\neq J_-\) but \(J_+(x)=-J_-(x)\) for at least one \(x\in M\), respectively \(J_+\neq -J_-\) but \(J_+(x)=J_-(x)\) for at least one \(x\in M\). Under this assumption one can relate bi-Hermitian structures to locally conformally Kähler metrics and the main result of this paper is the following: Let \(S=(M,J)\) be a compact complex surface such that \(H^0(S,K^*_S \otimes \mathcal L)\neq 0\) for a flat holomorphic line bundle of real type \(\mathcal L\); if \(S\) admits a locally conformally Kähler metric \(g\) with Lee form in the real de Rham class corresponding to \(\mathcal L\), then \(S\) admits a bi-Hermitian conformal structure \((C, J_+,J_-)\) with \(J_+=J\) and \(\sigma=[J_+,J_-]^\natural \in H^0(S,K^*_S \otimes \mathcal L)\). As a consequence new examples of bi-Hermitian metrics on primary Hopf surfaces \(S\) such that \(J_+(x)\neq J_-(x)\) on \(S\) and \(J_+=-J_-\) on an elliptic curve \(E\subset S\) are obtained.
