Ranking methods are fundamental tools in many areas. The authors propose new methods for the ranking of items in a network (``e.g. of web pages connected by links or of articles connected by citations''). They describe the model of an exchange economy induced by a netwok and on such way derive the ranking scheme. They show that ``if an exchange economy is governed by Cobb-Douglas utility maximizers, then the resulting ranking coincides with PageRank and the citation count cannot be derived from an exchange economy.''
