The so-called Lifting Problem for Commuting Subnormals (LPCS) may be stated as follows. For a given commuting tuple \(S\) of subnormal operators on a Hilbert space, whether there exists a tuple \(N\) of a commuting normal operators acting on a larger Hilbert space which extends \(S\). In [Oper. Theory, Adv. Appl. 35, 1--22 (1988; Zbl 0681.47005), Conjecture 1], \textit{R. E. Curto}, \textit{P. S. Muhly} and \textit{J.-B. Xia} (C-M-S) conjectured that (joint) hyponormality of \(S\) is sufficient for the lifting of \(S\) to \(N\). Although the C-M-S conjecture has been settled negatively in [\textit{R. E. Curto} and the second author, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 358, No.~11, 5139--5159 (2006; Zbl 1115.47020), Theorems 2.12, 3.3, 4.3], there certainly lies some interest in finding families of operator tuples which satisfy the C-M-S conjecture. Positively, the paper under review provides nontrivial, new classes of 2-variable weighted shifts which satisfy the C-M-S conjecture.
