This paper is devoted to analyse the local version of the Kinchin inequality in rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ Banach function spaces. An r.i.\ space \(X\) satisfies this property if there are constants \(\alpha, \beta >0\) such that for every measurable set \(E \subset [0,1]\) with \(m(E) >0\) there exists \(N:=N(E)\) such that \[ \alpha \varphi_X(m(E)) \Big\| \sum_{i=N}^\infty a_i r_i \Big\|_X \leq \Big\| \sum_{i=N}^\infty a_i r_i \chi_E \Big\|_X \leq \beta \varphi_X (m(E)) \Big\| \sum_{i=N}^\infty a_i r_i \Big\|_X \] for every \((a_i) \in \ell^2\) such that \( \sum_{i=N}^\infty a_i r_i \in X\), where \(\varphi_X(t):= \| \chi_{[0,t]} \|_X\) is the fundamental function of \(X\) and \(\{r_i\}\) are, as usual, the Rademacher functions. The authors prove in Theorem 5.2 that the local version of the Khinchin inequality holds in \(X\) if and only if either \(X = L^\infty\) or \(\gamma_{\varphi_X} >0,\) where \(\gamma_{\varphi_X} \) is the lower dilation index of the fundamental function \(\varphi_X\). They also prove that this condition is fulfilled by a large number of spaces, including spaces which are not ``close'' to \(L^\infty\). Recall here that the lower dilation index of a function \(\psi\) is \[ \gamma_\psi:= \lim_{t \to 0^-} \frac{\log M_\psi(t)}{\log t}, \] for \( M_{\psi}(t):= \sup_{0< s \leq 1} \frac{\psi(st)}{\psi t}.\) The paper is well-written and contains a lot of information about the topic. More characterizations of the main result are also given and some complementary results that will be useful are provided. Some clarifying examples are also given.
