Let \(J=[0;+\infty)\) and consider spaces of continuous functions on \(J\): \(C_b\) is the space of bounded continuous functions, \(C_0=\{f\in C_b\mid\exists\lim_{x\to0,+\infty}f(x)=0\}\), \(C_*=\{f\in C_b\mid\exists\lim_{x\to0}f(x)\) and \(\exists\lim_{x\to+\infty}f(x)\}\). For strictly positive weight \(w\in C_b\), let \(C_0^w=\{f\in C_0\mid wf\in C_0\}\). Given \(\alpha,\beta\in C_b\), consider the differential operator \(Au(x)=(\alpha u''+\beta u)(x)\) with different domains: \(D_0(A)=\{u\in C_0\cap C^2(\mathbb R_+)\mid Au\in C_0\}\), \(D_*(A)=\{u\in C_*\cap C^2(\mathbb R_+)\mid Au\in C_0\}\), \(D^w_0(A)=\{u\in C^w_0\cap C^2(\mathbb R_+)\mid Au\in C^w_0\}\), where \(w\) is a weight such that \(\sup_J wA(1/w)<+\infty\). Under some assumptions on \(\alpha,\beta\), it is proved that the operator \((A,D_*(A))\) is the generator of a Feller semigroup on \(C_b\), the operator \((A,D_0(A))\) is the generator of a Feller semigroup on \(C_0\), the operator \((A,D_0^w(A))\) is the generator of a positive semigroup on \(C_0^w\), given \(\gamma\in C_b\), \(\gamma\leq0\), the operator \((A+\gamma I,D_0^w(A))\) is a generator of positive semigroup on \(C_0^w\). Let \(K^2\) be a space of functions from \(C^2(J)\) with compact support and \(D_1=K^2\cap D_0(A)\), \(D_2=\{f\in K^2\mid f\text{ is constant near 0}\}\). Under additional assumptions on the functions \(\alpha,\beta\), it is proved that \(D_1\) is a core for the operator \((A,D_0(A))\), \(D_2\) is a core for the operator \((A,D_0(A))\). Let \(J=(0,1)\). As above, we can define subspaces \(D_0(A),D_*(A)\) and \(K^2(J)\). It is proved that \(C^2[0,1]\cap D_*(A)\) is a core for the operator \((A,D_*(A))\) and \(K^2\) is a core for the operator \((A, D_0(A))\). Some applications for degenerate ordinary differential operators are given.
