Relations are studied between left and right versions of thick sets, central sets, piecewise syndetic sets, IP sets, and \(\Delta\) sets in semigroups (see the definitions of these properties in [\textit{N. Hindman} and \textit{D. Strauss}, Algebra in the Stone-Čech compactification. Theory and applications. 2nd revised and extended ed. Berlin: Walter de Gruyter (2012; Zbl 1241.22001)]). A left \(J\) set \(A\) but not right \(J\) set is constructed in the free semigroup with a countable set of free generators. It is proved that the set \(A\) is not a right weak \(\Delta\) set, not a left weak \(\Delta\) set and not a left piecewise syndetic set. A left thick subset which is neither a right piecewise syndetic set nor a right weak set is constructed in any free group with an infinite number of free generators.
