The aim of this paper is to study in detail the class of simply connected Riemannian homogeneous spaces \(M\) which admit a totally geodesic hypersurfaces \(F\). The author proves some results on basic notions and constructions relative to this subject: \((M,F)\) is isometric to either (a) the Riemannian product of a space of constant curvature and a homogeneous space, or (b) the warped product of the Euclidean space and a homogeneous space, or (c) the twisted product of the line and a homogeneous space. The author deduces the following main result: A compact, simply connected, connected Riemannian homogeneous space that admits a totally geodesic hypersurface \(F\) is the Riemannian product of a standard sphere \(S^m\), \(m\geq 2\), and a compact homogeneous space \(M_2\). Then, \(F\) is (a domain of) the product of a great hypersurface \(S^{m-1}\) and \(M_2\). Here \(M_2\) is a homogeneous space. Some examples are presented.
