The main object under consideration in the paper is the \(L_p\) Christoffel function \[ \lambda_{n,p}(\omega,z)=\inf\,\frac1{|P(z)|^p}\,\int_{\mathbb{T}}|P(t)|^p\,\omega(dt), \] where \(\omega\) is a finite, positive and nontrivial Borel measure on the unit circle \(\mathbb{T}\), and the infimum is taken over all algebraic polynomials \(P\) of degree at most \(n-1\). The problem the authors address is the asymptotics of this value for certain points \(z\in\mathbb{T}\) as \(n\to\infty\). For \(p=2\) the value plays a crucial role in analyzing orthogonal polynomials and in their applications. For \(p\not=2\) the results are new even for simple measures on \(\mathbb{T}\). The authors show that for regular measures \(\omega\), Lebesgue points \(z\) of \(\omega\), and for lower semi-continuous \(\omega_{ac}'\) at \(z\) the limit relation holds \[ \lim_{n\to\infty} n\lambda_{n,p}(\omega,z)=2\pi\,E_p\,\omega_{ac}'(z), \] where \(E_p\) is a solution of an extremal problem \[ E_p=\inf\bigg\{\int_{-\infty}^\infty |f(x)|^p\,dx\bigg\}. \] The infimum here is taken over all entire functions of exponential type \(\pi\), \(f(0)=1\), which belong to \(L_p\) on the real line.
