Let \(R\) be a commutative noetherian ring and let \(D(R)\) be the derived category. A complex \(X\) is vanishing in \(D(R)\) if it isomorphic to the zero object in \(D(R)\), or equivalently all the cohomology modules \(H^i(X)\) (\(i\in \mathbb{Z}\)) vanish. The authors employ the next notation: \(D^{\pm}_{fg}(R)=(D^+(R)\cap D_{fg}(R))\cup(D^-(R)\cap D_{fg}(R))\) (here \(D_{fg}(R)\) is the full subcategory of \(D(R)\) consisting of chain complexes \(X\) with all homology modules \(H^n(X)\) (\(n\in\mathbb{Z}\)) being finitely generated \(R\)-modules). The main result of the paper is the theorem: Theorem. Let \(W\in D^{\pm}_{fg}(R)\) and \(X\in D(R)\). Then \(\text{RHom}_R(W,X)=0\) if and only if \(W^L\otimes_RX=0\).
